    Don't rely on the soil survey if the property is small. Say less than 2.5 - 5 acres. Soils will change dramatically in many areas of Puget Sound. Don't mix the soil cores if they are coming from different soils. And don't mix the whole core. There may be multiple horizons within the core sample.

    I couldn't be happier with my decision to use the arenagreen waterless footing from Performance Footing in my horse paddock! It's been a game-changer for both me and my horses. The footing offers excellent shock absorption and stability, ensuring a safe and comfortable surface for my equine friends. What sets it apart is the waterless feature, eliminating the need for constant watering and reducing dust significantly. It's low-maintenance and environmentally friendly, making it a win-win solution.

    For the overflow, just screw a hose to the threads in the white plug on top. Why on earth would you cut a hole in the side? You've just reduced the barrel capacity by around 5 gallons. (Simply drill out the opening in the white plug.) Also, instead of drilling out the other white plug --- you know it unscrews, right? This is the strangest blue barrel conversion video I've watched.

    Todays concern is what are the horses eating… Most hay has been sprayed with a Roundup typ product both during growth to eliminate weeds and as a finishing spray just before harvesting to reduce moisture and rotting. The horses eat this hay and grain and the herbicides are then spread into the compost. The herbicide can be traced in agricultural products for several years thereafter.

    I have been using horse manure in my garden for year. This year I am seeing some leaf curl. Could it be from the horse manure? I do let it sit for atleast 6 mos before using. Generally I rototill it to break it up, the mix into my garden soil. Could it be too high in Nitrogen?

    • @SnohomishCD
      @SnohomishCD 2 роки тому

      Hi Krista, Here is a response from our Agroforester, Carrie Brausieck. "Leaf curl in fruit trees is caused by two potential culprits: 1. a fungus that can cause curling in peaches and nectarines 2. aphids causing curling in many other tree species Leaf curl has been a problem for many this year due to the very long wet and cold spring that we had, so I doubt the manure is the culprit. If there are no signs of aphids on the trees then the problem is most likely fungal in nature. Spraying trees with copper spray (you can find this at a garden store) as trees are entering their dormant phase (in fall after the tree has fruited) can help get this under control. If there are signs of aphids, they are fairly easy to control. You can spray them off of tree leaves, rinse trees with organic dish soap and water, or get an army of lady bugs to release onto your trees. "

    9:15 you recommend tapping all the way to the end of the tap. That's a big mistake. NPT is National Pipe Taper. By going all the way to the end you eliminate the taper and create what's called NPS or National Pipe Straight. Pipe thread is tapered to facilitate tight sealing. Being that the barrel wall is somewhat thin - you're eliminating the taper feature. I'd go just to the point where the starting teeth of the tap reach the fully formed threads. This way whatever you thread into it isn't trying to cut threads but the taper produces a very tight seal. I'd still use the silicone sealant, but you're going to get a tighter fit if you don't go to the end of the tap. I'm still watching. Just have to jump in right here to point out a common mistake. At 12:00 you show a plastic ball valve. Yeah, it's doable, but they often take considerably more effort to open and close. With the necessary force you COULD strip out your bottom through-hole barrel connector. A brass fitting would be easier on the connection. While plastic expands at a given rate, the brass fitting will also expand at it's own rate. The difference between the two can cause minor cracking and leaking. So use of metal fittings is not the BEST of the best option. A better option would be one of those hose attachment ball valves that are also of plastic. They're smaller and easier to operate than the ball valve you show in the video.

    • @rthinds
      @rthinds 9 місяців тому

      Wrong. He said it was an NPT tap. That means the cutting threads are tapered clear to the end of the threaded section. There is no "straight" threaded component to an NPT tap. The entire thing is tapered. You are referring to a NPT/NPS "combo" tap, which would be clearly labeled.

    • @petec6690
      @petec6690 9 місяців тому

      The wall of the barrel is so thin that any taper at all is going to be negligible. Tapping all the way means you'll have a loose and leaking joint every time all the time. @@rthinds

    • @rthinds
      @rthinds 9 місяців тому

      @@petec6690 Yes the walls are thin, so the "tapering" will be negligible. As for leaking joints, all one would need to do is screw the fitting all the way into the hole, where the tapered threads of the fitting match the tapered threads of the hole. In other words - as hand-tight as you can get it without stripping anything. Then it won't leak.

    Wait what do we amend soil with in winter?!

    • @SnohomishCD
      @SnohomishCD 2 роки тому

      Hi Annie. I passed your question to one of our farm planner and here is their response: "You do not want to amend your soil in winter. Composted manure should be applied in spring and summer months when plants can begin to utilize the nutrients you have applied. In winter plants are not uptaking a lot of nutrients and nutrients such as nitrogen can leave soils in surface and groundwater drainage. Many horse boarding facilities in our area produce more manure than they can safely apply to their soils. Therefore, they must find ways of hauling off excess manure which can be costly. Composting manure for bedding can provide a cost effective solution to excess manure production and allow that manure to be reused on site. Farm planners are available to come out to horse properties and do some nutrient management calculations to see if you have a surplus of manure. If you don't have a surplus then this practice may not be for you, but if your animals are producing more than can be applied to your pastures, this can be a great practice to explore. " I hope this helps!

    Okay, so having a barn is still a must!! I suppose so they don't over eat!? Mmmmm. But what if I just want to keep horses outside all the time, with a big shelter, no shoes, and just ride them from point a to point b in the field and that's it!? I'm not sure about shaving their cut off during the winter time and putting a blanket on them. I may have too, because I'd love to canter in the snow on them, even bareback, on some days above freezing for sure!! In the snow. :) In the winter time I'd have hey etc. Idk about grain, but plan on riding them at a walk most of the time!! Grain mmmm. herd some issues could arise from that. Plus I lake in basic horse care but one day want a couple horses, and if I have the money. Should I give it a go, if it's too much, I'd board them at another barn and quite possibly lease them. ETC.
